December 12, 2007
As we approach this winter holiday season, I hope that we will have peace.
Our new fitness center is open. We will be having it available to the community from 3:15 – 5:15 pm during the week. The equipment is state-of-the-art.
The California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) is fast approaching again. This is the test that students must pass in order to be eligible for graduation. We will be offering tutoring classes after-school and Saturday. If we determine your child needs to be in this class, staff will be contacting you.
Our school will be going through a county audit in the spring and we need parents to be on committees. In 2009, we will be visited for accreditation of the school by Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). This visit will validate our classes for college. We need parents and students to be on the committees. If you are interested, please contact Dr. Kearns at (818) 673-1300.
We are working on our small learning communities. We have our freshman center and have two other communities for grade 10 – 12 students. The communities will offer different Career Technical Education pathways, as well as emphasis on subject matters. We have in place a technology pathway, DNA lab, and health careers. We are developing various internships for the students.
Teachers are working to develop inter-disciplinary curriculum.
Safety is a continued concern of all of us.
The safety measures to discuss with your children would include:
• Avoid walking alone and never take a ride with or walk or talk with a stranger
• If a stranger approaches or attempts to get someone into the vehicle, scream and run for help.
• Students should use precautionary measures even when waiting inside of the school until parents arrive.
• Students may use the telephone in the main office to call parents and wait in the main office until a parent arrives.
I would again like to ask you for your assistance to help us enforce the Board of Education’s policy of no electronic devices on or visible during the school day.
We still need volunteers for our various committees including the Curriculum Committee, Discipline Committee, and Operation Committee. Please call Laura Avila (818) 673-1300 if you are interested.
Have a safe and happy holiday season.
